Free Download: ‘Music for Our Future’ feat. Untold, King Midas, HudMo, Lusine and others

Another unmissable freebie, this time courtesy of XLR8R, Pitchfork and Create Digital Music. Apparently it serves as a soundtrack for a new Sci-Fi series called Caprica and I must say its incredible. It features unreleased and previously released material by the likes of Hudson Mohawke, Untold, King Midas Sound, Richard Devine feat. Otto von Schirac, Lusine, among others... The level is generally quite high, but I must highlight two good surprises: 'Gravity' by Lusine and 'Turf Day' by Low Limit, two excellent downtempo tunes that have been on repeat on my iPod ever since I downloaded them.

Check the XLR8R/Music for Our Future page for the free download.

Mix & Interview: Volatil

Another week, another interview, closely related to the last one, as you will see... We keep on the dubstep/techno tip with Argentinian born Volatil, a wicked producer who (guess what!) lives in Barcelona, where he usually plays his live act, sometimes alone and sometimes in full up form, together with a vocalist and Satta B on the decks. Initially a straight-up techno/house man, Volatil progressively got sucked in to the heavy bass of the hybrid techno/dubstep productions of late 2008 and 2009. Although he keeps a very clear 4x4 mindset, he completely absorbded the dub elements and has been creating some trully amazing tunes recently. Just check the brilliant Refugio EP out now on Dubkraft Records to see what this man is capable of, and keep an eye out for his next releases out on Barish Records, LCL Netlabel and Micropunto Schallplatten (run by our last interviewee, Ikkaku).

Well and listen to the mix he recorded exclusively for mrgasparov.com! Gracias Nico!!

Interview

When did you start making beats, what were your influences then?

I got a copy of fruity loops in 2000 in Buenos Aires and started to make beats and experimented recording some guitars over it, at that moment I was listening every kind of music but I got into electronic music listening to Underworld and Massive Attack.

When was the first time you listened to dubstep and what was your reaction?

First time i think was in 2006.  I went to see Various Productions at sidecar in Barcelona, didn't like it much at that time, I found it too dark.

Give your definition of dubstep. where do you see it going in the near future?

I see dubstep as an open mix of different styles, really I’m not good  defining it, but it’s nice to see the way it’s growing taking the right elements from every kind of music, where is it going? Everywhere.

How is the scene in barcelona?

It’s a city that has a huge cultural mixture, so i think that helps every style of music, and there is a lot of good dubstep djs and producers working here, is a pitty that politics don’t give support to the talents, promoters and venues.

Next releases and future plans?

Next releases are coming in some compilations, Barish Records, Dubkarft records and a remix on lcl netlabel are scheduled for the beginning of next year, as well as a techno ep as Tácito, coming on  Micropunto Schallplatten, so it’s going to be a nice 2010!

Beaterator: Free remix album with the best of the best!

Just thought I'd let you all know about this cool freebie! Rockstar games (the same that make GTA) are making a game called Beaterator, apparently together with Timbaland, and they have released a promotional remix album which features tunes by top names like Flying Lotus, Dabrye, Prefuse 73, Hudson Mohawke or Starkey. Don't know if this is a limited time thing so get it now before you regret it!

Mix & Interview: Check One

This week we pay homage to one of the few Barcelona originals who is now fully supporting - as well as mixing and producing - Dubstep. The man of the week is Check One, who's been in the game for a long time, having released records on labels such as Disboot or Dub Bullet and played in the most important local festivals: Sonar (1999 and 2008), Monegros and BAM. More active than ever, he has a couple of releases coming out soon and he dedicates a lot of his spare time writing on his ace music blog, Sudando Graves.

Like Cardopusher and Cauto before him (weird that they all have aliases started with 'c'...) Carlos recorded an exclusive mix for mrgasparov.com and kindly answered some questions. Gràcies Carlos!

Interview

When did you start making beats, what were your influences then?

I started back in 1995 with two friends, with whom I created the Zuell group, which lasted until 2006. We were very influenced by 'trip-hop', specially the Bristol scene (Massive Attack, Smith & Mighty, Portishead) or anything which came out on Ninja Tune and Mo Wax.

When was the first time you listen to dubstep and what was your reaction?

The first time I listened to Dubstep was in a DMZ mix for Marry Anne Hobbs' radio show in 2006. The feeling I had was the same as when I heard trip-hop: i was listening to a kind of music that blended different genres at once.

Give your definition of dubstep. where do you see it going in the near future?

Dubstep is today's most experimental and cutting-edge electronic music genre. I don't know where it will get because it had a quick implantation, unlike what happened in Barcelona with drum & bass, which took a very long time to consolidate itself as far as parties and events go.

How is the scene in barcelona?

It's like a big family! :) There are record labels, collectives, weekly and monthly nights, producers and DJs.... what else can we ask for? Great!!

Next releases and future plans?

I have a couple of releases waiting to be released, one of them on BassWeight Recordings (New Zealand) and another one on Alchemy Dubs, which is run by a mate of mine from Madrid that currently lives in London. I'm also preparing new tunes for an LP, currently still without a label. On the other hand I keep writing on my blog,Sudando Graves and this month I go to Madrid to play in a couple of parties.

Mix & Interview: Cauto

This week we present Cauto, the top Catalan producer in my opinion. He currently lives in Barcelona but was born in Banyoles (north of Catalunya)  in the midst of a family of musicians and you can certainly tell that from the quality of his arrangements and his amazing production skills. So far he has released tunes on DJ / Rupture's Dutty Artz, Discontinu, Dubkraft and most importantly Disboot, a seriously good local label which he runs together with Uxuca, Dr. Res and Man In The Attic. Be sure to check this label and some of their newest releases, such as the excellent remix that Cauto did of Filastine's 'Hungry Ghosts'.

As if this wasn't enough he still has time to work on his C156 project (together with The Gardener, Dr. Res and Drome), excellent collaborations with people like Das Nevez and sick parties with the Disboot gang. Introduction done, now listen to his exclusive mix and read what he has to say! Gràcies Pau!

Interview

When did you start making beats, what were your influences then?

I started when I was 16 years old with an XP80 keyboard and my dad's G4. My dad was constantly telling me off because of the bass, hehe. My main influences then were 90s Techno and Hip-Hop.

When did you first listen to dubstep and what was your reaction?

It was in 2006 when my friend (The Gardener) made me listen to a DJ set by Atomly @ The Cell (Berlin). I was flipping out with the bass and especially with Toasty's tune "Angel". After that I spent a few weeks listening to this mix again and again :)

Give your definition of Dubstep. Where do you see it going in the near future?

I think dubstep is a mix between a lot of different style, and therefore I think it will keep evolving and branching out.

How is the scene in Barcelona?

Getting better and better! There's a load of good artists, a growing number of people going to the nights and, most importantly, many more events where you can go and listen to these artists.

Next releases and future plans for Cauto and Disboot?

We've just got out our first vinyl  releases out on Disboot, a 7" with Filastine's "Hungry Ghost" on one side and my remix on the opposite side, and another one featuring Offshore with two tunes: "Black destroyer hill" and "Simsalabim". Future plans? Work a lot on C156's live and new tunes and soon we will be releasing a 12" on Disboot. As Cauto: there are a couple of remixes about to be released, namely Belcro's "Frontera" and Brunetto's "License to Beat"; I will collaborate more with other artists - like I'm doing now with Das Nevez - and I'm gonna prepare an EP for 2010. As far as Disboot goes, it won't stop! There's many excellent releases on the way so keep an eye open!

Mix & Interview: Cardopusher

I've been waiting for this feature for a long time and now here it is! The first in a string of exclusive mixes & interviews from wicked producers and DJs!

The first guest of honor is badman Cardopusher. Born in Caracas, Venezuela he now lives in Barcelona and is part of the Chorizo Show / B.LOW family. Belonging to a generation of amazing Venezuelan producers - think Pacheko, Pocz, Emmerson, Sesped - he's insanely talented, a big DJ and a very nice guy. His productions are extremely varied and creative and he has released tunes in labels such as Hyperdub, True Tiger, Ad Noiseam or Offroad Recordings. I asked him a few questions and he kindly recorded a mix for mrgasparov.com. Thanks Luis!

Interview

When did you start making beats, what were your influences then?

I started to make beats around 10 years ago, it was just like messing around with loops on Sony Acid, i got very into it at the first time i tried. My influences were mostly IDM from the old era of Warp and Rephlex records. It was difficult with no internet by that time to listen to underground music.

When did you first listen to dubstep and what was your reaction?

It was weird. I listened to some of the clips of the Grime and Grime 2 compilations on the Rephlex website after taking a look at the reviews of both records. With a first listening i didn´t realize it was a new genre, for me it was like a darker 2step music.

Give your definition of dubstep. Where do you see it going in the near future?

To be honest I'm very bad giving definitions but for me dubstep is bass music, i think dubstep is taking different directions and people is experimenting with new things. Not sure if it should be called dubstep nowadays.

How's the scene in Barcelona?

It´s great. I think i did the right choose when moving to Barcelona. I met good friends here who has the same passion for music as i do and we all get influences from each other every time, that´s why i love being part of the Chorizo / B.Low family. It´s the same feeling i have with my venezuelan homies who have been working hard everyday since i left home. Big ups to them!

Next releases and future plans?

For the moment i have lined up some stuff including some remix jobs for Filastine,Migrant (forthcoming on Corsario Digital) Moldy, Badawi (forthcoming on The Index) Kid606 and his new project, a 12" on On The Edge, a 12" on True Tiger and many more. All this stuff is finished just waiting to see the light soon.

Suckafish P Jones – Phantasmatica EP // Sick FREE release out now on Disboot

Watch out, this man is dangerous! His name is Suckafish P Jones, he was born in Australia (at least his accent points in that direction) and currently lives a life of sonic crime in Barcelona, perverting all electronic music conventions to create a mad hybrid sound that fuses half of the world's music into what he calls border-crossing heavystep riddims around anthems of lashingly ironically abstract lyricism. The truth is his music, and consequently his live act, aren't lyrical at all... they're heavy, crazy (bordering on mental) and just plain fun!

So, you can download his latest Phantasmatica EP for FREE courtesy of our friends at Disboot! Do it! It's f*@king free man...

Hey, wanna get some free quality music? The guys at XLR8R, together with our friends Iberian Records, have decided to give away 'Baila Mundo' one of the tunes on the forthcoming Octa Push EP on Iberian. This tune, like the others on the EP, is a serious dancefloor killer, so make sure to check it out!

Just a reminder that Octa Push will be our guests at B·LOW #7 on the 26th of November! You just can't miss that...

Satta B and me played all sorts of tunes, basically sampling a bit of everything we're into right now. Big up Numaestro and Subsound for the hosting and random shouts!
