Mix & Interview: Infestus

A few days ago I posted about the release of Tigre EP by Lisbon native Infestus. His real name is Luís Pinto and he lives and breathes music, accumulating five simultaneous musical projects - Volte Face, Lisboa Balal, Flashbeat, Corvo Mukulu, Cosmika Laika, and I'm sure there must be one or two i left out... He is part of a generation of young Portuguese musicians who got into bass music under the creative influence of Buraka Som Sistema, Octa Push and the infinite record collection that is the Internet. But he's not just another kid making tunes in his bedroom: he's a talented multi-instrumentalist, a sick producer and DJ, a netlabel owner and has just been selected (alongside Marco from the Portuguese techno/dub duo Photonz) to participate in the 2010 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy! So, don't forget this name and be sure to check out his netlabel Circus Maximus, where you can download loads of free music (under creative commons) and listen to the exclusive mix he prepared for mrgasparov.com. Obrigado Luís!

Interview

When did you start making beats, what were your influences then?

I started making beats around 2002. I didn’t know much about electronic music. I was just making random electronic stuff, based on the few things I knew about House and Techno music. I didn’t really had an objective and I barely had any references other than video games soundtracks and “The Matrix”!

Some time later, a couple of friends formed a rap crew and I was invited to make beats for them. That’s when I started to get into rap music, listening to local artists like Sam the Kid, Chullage, Dealema. All of the sudden I was making hip hop beats, barely knowing anything about it. They didn’t like my beats so eventually I stopped being a member of the crew!

But I kept making beats (and even posted a couple of beat tapes on the internet) and eventually returned to electronic music, and got especially interested in Dub.

When was the first time you listened to dubstep and what was your reaction?

It was around 2006. I first heard of Dubstep through the Portuguese project Cartell70. I found that project while looking for Portuguese drum & bass acts, and eventually ran into their myspace. And obviously, Buraka Som Sistema, which also contributed alot in making me notice the UK Grime and Dubstep scene.

I decided to explore the original source of those sounds, and eventually found Burial, which was an interesting introduction to the sound, but added to my confusion about the subject, since it is not the most mainstream dubstep sound. Because of that, I couldn’t understand it’s relationship with dub music or dance music in general. It sounded too slow, too abstract. But I liked it!

Obviously I kept exploring, and eventually found Mala, Skream and Benga... Which have a sound that is closer to the original dubstep definition (which I guess no longer applies isn’t it?).

Give your definition of dubstep. where do you see it going in the near future?

For me dubstep is post-garage 140 bpm music. A lot of stuff I consider dubstep nowadays isn’t even based on sub-bass anymore, or in half-step for that matter. So I guess it all comes down to the Hardcore Continuum.

In my mixes, I have a tendency to let a lot of kuduro beats (and now even UK Funky) get thrown together with dubstep. I guess I will never get over the fact that my introduction to dubstep was not through the pure UK stuff, but local Lisbon acts influenced by it.

And then there’s also the original 2-Step Garage tracks, the Future Garage movement, and the “techno-dubstep” fusion which reminds alot of my House and Techno origins.

The future will see dubstep getting increasingly ramified I believe.

There’s the stuff like Low End Theory, and the LA Scene. For them, it seems that dubstep, hip hop beats and other forms of experimental electronic music is all the same. It’s a great philosophy!

Then there’s that whole Funkystep deal. And of course Future Garage, if enough Dj’s and producers adhere to it.

How is the scene in Lisboa?

The Lisbon scene has been extremely exciting for me. Ever since my teen years I’ve always been connected to several different sub-cultures, while at the same time not quite belonging to none. And if there is something we have in Lisbon is variety! Is Bairro Alto that different from Shibuya? Maybe not.

In Lisbon dowtown you can attend, in the same night, Dubstep raves, hardcore punk and metal gigs, blues and jazz bars, then the several different kinds of djs and clubs, and of course, Fado houses. For a person like me, having friends in all of these scenes makes it an extremely interesting experience. But there’s never enough time to see everything!

The electronic music scene is especially active, and has a lot of amazing talent! All of these local artists, like Ka§par, Octa Push, DJ Ride, Batida, Sam the Kid and others are still probably my main influence. A couple of years ago they were all my idols but I hadn’t met any of them, and now alot of these are my friends. I’m lucky to have all this people living in the same city I live.

Next releases and future plans?

In the near future I have plans for a Lisboa Balal EP (Lisboa Balal being my strictly dubstep and experimental alter-ego) and a Cosmika Laika EP, which is a project I co-founded with JC, based on broken beat and nu-jazz. As Infestus I have plans to return to the beat tapes and beat making!

All of this will be released through the netlabel Circus Maximus.

Other than that I just wanna play as many gigs as possible, and enjoy all of this!

I've been waiting eagerly for this mix! These guys are definitely amongst my favorite producers right now.  Hailing from Caracas, Venezuela (like their good friend and former mrgasparov.com interviewee, Cardopusher) lately they've been focusing on producing some of the badest tunes this 2009. Both of them work professionally as sound designers in their hometown and have done work for big companies, such as HBO or Sony. In their spare time they make tunes together or solo and have achieved great things. Their discography is impressive, having already released tunes on labels such as Street Bass, LoDubs, Dub Bullet, Seclusiasis, Murder Channel or SpectraLiquid, next year will see further releases on Shockout and Senseless (in the beginning of 2010 Senseless will be releasing a massive 12" featuring Zarback and Dorado, a remix by Brackles and another one by myself). Plus they currently have a ton of dubs which will surely be released soon.

So what can we expect from this mix for mrgasparov.com? Nothing but BIG things... 15 original and exclusive tunes for your listening pleasure! They kindly called this mix The Gaspalove Mix and even prepared an exclusive piece of artwork to go with it! Muchísimas gracias maricos!

Interview

When did you start making beats, what were your influences then?

I began producing my own music with a laptop around 4 years ago. Around that time I was listening to a lot of IDM, some Breakcore, Electronica and other things...

When was the first time you listened to dubstep and what was your reaction?

It was when Cardopusher was building his Down To The Wire album, I think around 2006 - 2007. I saw him play his first dubstep set around that time and I was blown away by the sound. I felt it immediately.

Give your definition of dubstep. where do you see it going in the near future?

I think it's a style and a sound that connects many dots in music in a way that makes perfect sense to me. For the future, producers should avoid formulas and keep trying new things.

How is the scene in Caracas?

It's small, but interesting. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that many of us are good friends above everything else. People like Pocz, Cardopusher, Emmerson and myself, we all come from different backgrounds, but we feel a connection with the sound and want to keep pushing it forward.

Next releases and future plans?

Many things with Pocz. We just released our first Mixtape - Album, its called THE BANGOVER. We are looking fwd to the release of our tune ZARBAK in Spring 2010 on Senseless Recordings, with remixes from Brackles and Mr Gasparov!!!, we will also have new tunes coming out on Shockout!, and the japanese version of The Bangover, with a new mixtape in it... Thanks for the interview and BIG UP!

Release: Tigre EP by Infestus

Infestus AKA Luís Pinto, is an upcoming producer from Lisbon. He just founded the Circus Maximus netlabel/collective which will see lots of free downloads in the next few months. He's a seriously talented guy and that shows on his music and is proven by the fact that he has been chosen to participate in the 2010 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy! His new release - and first on the Circus Maximus label - Tigre EP is a free download containing 7 of his original tunes with a very broad range of influences - garage vibes on "Eu e Tu (Ela)" , serious funk on  "Bitch Queen Boogie" or drum'n'bass on "Mortalha Barato".

Check the original post or download Tigre EP directly. It's seriously worth it!

If you're still not convinced just listen to this preview of his tune 'Eu e Tu (Ela)'

Party: Ginga Beat Birthday @ LUX, Lisboa feat. Martyn, HudMo

Ginga Beat is a radio show on the national Portuguese radio Antena 3. They are an amazing team, backed up by the Red Bull Music Academy and have been broadcasting the finest music on the Portuguese airwaves for the last year. Here's a little quote from the original post (with a few mistakes...):

It’s been an exciting past twelve months for the Ginga Beat crew, that has seen specials on the new wave of electronic funk, the dubstep/funky love affair, Warp Records, dubtechno demigod Moritz von Oswald, the nu neo-soul movement, and Sir Otis Jackson Jr., as well as nuff local goodness, all streaming on Red Bull Music Academy Radio and Lisbon-based Radio Ant3na. Reasons enough for a big birthday bonanza Ginga Beat_On Air that will take place at Lisbon’s Lux on February 25.

Starting off the night will be Dutch dubstep-not-dubstep pioneer Martyn with an exclusive lecture session for the local music community, before the Ginga Beat crew, Rui Miguel Abreu, DJ Mpula and class of Academy ’08 Ines Coutinho aka Violet, host a live show on Ant3na from 12 am to 2 am. Bringing the ruckus on the dancefloor alongside Martyn will be Warp wonderboy Hudson Mohawke and tropical rave buccaneers Batida with special live sets, as well as DJ Ride and Academy participants Ka§par, Mushug (as part of Octa Push), Infestus, and Markur (as part of Photonz).

For a taste, check the Photonz’ remix of Music Life (to be released on Ka§par’s EP of the same name on Groovement next Monday), and tune in to the latest edition of Ginga Beat here.

Summing it up, the Ginga Beat crew is throwing a party, and if you're in Lisbon on the 25th of February you can go to Lux and check out:

An incredible line-up which highlights some of the best electronic music acts in Portugal in one of the best clubs in the world!

Review: Festival UM @ Music Box, Lisboa

DSCN6247

DSCN6208

Just came back from Lisboa from a wicked weekend and a brilliant Saturday night at Music Box. This night was part of Festival UM and counted with the presence of Bass Clef, Andre Wakko and myself. The atmosphere was amazing and by 1:00 the club was already packed, which in Lisbon is seriously uncommon!

Mr. Gasparov

Mr. Gasparov

The highlight of the night goes absolutely to Bass Clef, who's about to release a new album on Blank Tapes very soon. I hadn't heard his stuff for a very long time, since he has been very busy and hasn't produced much in the last 2 years or so. But what I heard that night was an incredibly positive surprise, with Ralph playing loads of fresh material, clearly departing from his previous dubstep releases into a much more party-vibe material, with loads of soca, kuduro and whatever else makes your ass move. As if this wasn't enough he played the trombone, theremin and a myriad percussion instruments to very spectacular effect!

André Wakko
played a nice blend of house and techno to the crowds happiness and then came local legends Ka§par and Vahagn who continued with the techno/house vibe and eventually switched smoothly into more broken beats and even the odd dubstep tune!

UM: International Festival for Experimental Intermedia // Lisbon 12-15 November

Next Saturday the 14th of November I'll be playing in Lisboa in a night which is part of the UM Festival - it's gonna be at Music Box and starts at 23:00. This is the second edition of this festival which focuses on new, experimental media. As they put it:

UM: International Festival for Experimental Intermedia is a four-day festival programme taking place between 12-15 Nov 2009, across various venues in central Lisbon, with the exhibition continuing until 23 Nov.

The event includes exhibitions, workshops, talks, concerts, performances and public works, with internationally renowned artists, musicians, academics, designers, architects and practitioners taking part.

UM aims to go beyond the limited term of ‘media art’ and instead present ‘intermedia’ practices, as a combination of art forms, which focus on concept, communication, realisation and implication. Within the exhibition, talks and workshops emphasizes is placed on cross-over, experimental and socially engaged practices, which take risks, extend ideas and bring together different approaches and techniques.

As one of the only kind of festival’s currently taking place in Portugal, UM aims to support the presentation and dissemination of contemporary intermedia practices from Portugal, as well as bring leading international artists to the country. Drawing on open curational approaches to programming, this year music promoters and curators, QuJunktions (UK) and Prof. Jussi Ängeslevä (FI/DE) from the Digital Media class, The Berlin University of the Arts/Universität der Künste Berlin have been invited to input into the programme selection.

Bass Clef

I was initially going to participate with a full on installation piece but later, due to a lack of time and some underdeveloped ideas, the organization decided to have me playing music! Unfortunately I won't be able to see the whole festival, but the programme is absolutely sick, with exhibitions and workshops by the STEIM, André Gonçalves, Rafael Toral, and many more, spanning over 3 days. Saturday night participants get loose with the sounds of Bass Clef, Andre Wakko and myself!
